My partner and I have been looking to move to Melbourne for some time now and so I was particularly interested to see my future Cities new image.
The logo was developed by the Australian branch of Landor Associates for just shy of $200,000 and according to CEO Dr Kathy Alexander has the following objectives:
Below are a dozen alternate colour schemes, as well as the final mark which is said to represent the cultural and artistic nature of Melbourne.

If you’ve done any amount of graphic design or typography you’ve no doubt noticed that the apparent size of type varies greatly between fonts when used at the same point size. Some appearing almost double the size of their smaller counterparts.
The reason is that the point size refers to the body that the character occupies, and although type of equal point size may sit on the same body, they will not occupy the space in the same way.
I wont go into them all, but various elements of the type effect it’s usable size. One of the biggest factors is the x-height, as pictured in this posts heading.

If you were to look at the above two typefaces, Verdana and Goudy Old Style, without the grid lines, it would appear that the Verdana is a larger point size. They are however both 50pt.
As you can seen from the grid lines, the x-height of Verdana is much higher then that of Goudy making the typeface appear larger. This, among other reasons, is why typefaces of equal point sizes appear so different.
Not that this information will help your typography at all, but a little extra knowledge never hurt anyone.
I hope this was interesting.

It got me thinking, what is worst thing I’ve done while working…
I was once working on a website design and had been stuck on a particular piece of code for some time, It was 11:00pm and I decided I’d had enough for the night and would start fresh the following day.
I then proceeded to roll around until 1:00am thinking about it before getting up and going back to work until 4:00am in the morning when I got the problem solved.

How about you, working hard or hardly working?

If you follow logo design you’ve probably seen more than 1 blog about Pepsi’s latest branding ( 11 rebrands so far… ) receiving a lot of flak, while Coca-Cola manages to regularly produce something fresh time and time again while maintaining their one and only logotype.
The below time line shows Pepsi’s 11 re-brands over the last century, while excluding a few tweaks, Coca-Cola’s logotype has served them for over 100 years.

Personally i think 1991 was about perfect, and Pepsi should have stopped there. Continue reading...
