Marketing with Twitter, off to a good start

Posted July 16th, 2009.

marketing with twitter

For a long time I was convinced that the social network, Twitter, was little more than people yelling into the void. The soul objective of twittering seemed to be building followers only for the sake of having them, typically by following others in the hope they will return the favour despite not having any interest in what they have to say.

After reading plenty of articles by people who apparently make their living via some sort of social network marketing, many of whom seem to focus on Twitter, I decided to sign up and try me hand at tweeting.

I wasn’t surprised to see that many twitter marketers simply spam the same content over and over to reach there potential customers, which isn’t something I particularly fancy spending my time doing, but after a month or so of aggressively recruiting around 5000 followers I sent out a single stream of tweets pointing potential readers to 100 or so of my blog posts. I was surprised…

The following day I was contacted regarding a design project for a potential client who found me via, you guessed it, Twitter. Only time will tell if Twitter will yield some continual business, but I can’t argue with the initial results.

On a lighter note, here’s a little fun at Twitters expense that pretty much sums up my initials thoughts. It seems I’m not the only one.

Do you Tweet?

I’d love to hear any successes you’ve had marketing via Twitter or any other social networks.

A year ago I was the same as you, I thought Twitter was for geeks and social media professionals and while most of my blogging friends got into it straightaway I ignored it and missed out on a great source of traffic.

It’s a great way of getting your posts out there and works as a sort of feedreader on steroids. I just need to get my follower numbers up!

    Rob,
Ditto, I joined twitter about 2 years after it’s launch and so missed the boom so to speak, but it’s never to late to start.

Between tweeting my own new posts, retweets from social media buttons on my blog posts and retweeting a few posts myself it provides a steady stream of fairly targeted traffic.
