Frequently asked questions

graphic design faq

You’ll likely have a few questions before beginning your graphic design project, hopefully the answer to any questions you have are contained here.

If you are still unsure about something or would like any additional information, feel free to contact me with your query and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Logo / design related questions.

How much does a logo, website or design cost?

Unfortunately this cannot be answered without knowing the details of your project, pricing varies depending on many factors.

A small or medium size business may expect 1 or 2 refined logo ideas and a 5-6 page website, while a larger company may require much more. This would obviously increase the cost.

As part of submitting a project brief, you will be asked to provide the required details and also any project budget you may have.

Return to the questions

How long does the design process take?

This again varies with the complexity of your project. It can take a week, a month or longer depending on your requirements. Once you have submitted your project requirements and deadline I can provide a time frame for completion of the project.

Return to the questions

What will I receive as initial logo ideas?

After reviewing initial sketches / ideas and selecting the logos I feel work best, you will be sent a PDF file containing computer generated examples of the preferred logos, the range of sketches can also be sent if you so desire.

Your PDF file will include a 100% black version, greyscale version and a reversed image on a black background to display how your logo will look on a variety of reproductions. A variety of colour schemes for you logo may also be included depending on your requirements.

PDF is a standard document format, the Adobe free PDF viewer Acrobat, is available for download here.

What files will I receive once my logo design is finished?

Your final logo will be provided as a Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or Encapsulated PostScript (.eps) file. These are standard vector format file types which can be scaled to any size without loss of quality. With the appropriate software these formats can be saved as any other format you require.

Return to the questions

Can we speak on the telephone to discuss a project?

Absolutely, after contacting me initially via this webpage we can certainly speak on the telephone.

Return to the questions

Can we meet face-to-face to discuss a project?

I work from south-east Melbourne, if you are nearby and would like to discuss your project face-to-face, a time can certainly be arranged to do so. With email and express postal services however, projects can be completed to satisfaction in a timely fashion without requiring such a meeting.

Return to the questions

How/when do i pay for my design project.

Typically I require a 30% deposit prior to beginning work, with the balance to be paid upon approval of final artwork and prior to its delivery, this includes payment for any printed media required such as stationery. A copy of my project agreement will be sent to you prior to beginning work.

I accept direct deposit/bank transfer, Paypal or cheque as payment methods.

Print related questions.

What is one, two or three colour printing?

One, two or three colour printing, is printing using one, two or three inks only, referred to as Pantone colours. My own logo for example is a two colour logo, red & grey.

This system of printing also includes lighter or darker shades of the ink used. For example, a logo using a single red ink only could include pink, as simply less of the 1 colour ink is applied to paper.

One, two or sometimes 3 colours are typically used in identity design for logos and corporate stationery, as this provides a simple effective colour scheme that is economical to print, and produces constantly accurate colour from print to print. In addition to this Pantone colours have a wider colour palette then CMYK and can yield more vibrant colours.

Return to the questions

What is CMYK ( full ) colour printing?

CMYK stands for cyan, magenta, yellow, black. These are the 4 colours used for reproducing all full colour documents. Anything with photographs such as product brochures, shopping catalogues, posters etc. will almost certainly have been printed in CMYK.

Return to the questions

How long does it take to receive my printed media once approved?

Once the final design has been approved, banner and large format printing generally takes 5-6 working days while offset printing generally takes 8-12 working days.

These are of course general figures, large projects, or those with complexities such as embossing or foil-stamping will take longer.

Web related questions.

Which colours can I use on my website?

All modern screens are RGB which produce a full range of colour, your webpage can have as many or as few colours as you desire and have none of the concerns of print.

Return to the questions

I want a website, but do not have a domain name or hosting provider.

I can register a domain name for you, and arrange web hosting on your behalf. Please be aware, though inexpensive, domain name registration and hosting is an additional, and re-occurring cost outside the scope of your design project.

If transferred to your sole control, it will be your responsibility to renew your domain name and/or hosting account when required. Depending on the term of your registration, this may be required at one, two, five or up to 10 year intervals, depending on your choice.
