Mitsubishi logo design, a winning combination

It’s not unheard of when two companies merge that one identity simply consumes the other, which seems like a shame, or alternatively the two are mashed together into something that doesn’t particularly represent either.

The combination of the Iwasaki family and tosa clans to form Mitsubishi resulted in neither of these, the three layer crest of the Iwasaki family and three oak leafs of the Tosa clan joined to form what became an excellent logo. Continue reading...

I was interested today to read about Harvey Ball, the graphic artist credited with designing the smiley face logo in 1963. No disrespect to Harvey but I couldn’t help think that some 5 year old girl a millennium ago was more likely to have created the first smiley.

I’d love to pretend we had sheets and sheets of sketches and refinement, but in all honesty a 5 minute chat with my Creative Partner Mark Girvan confirmed that we needed to sum up Property and Maintenance in a single simple mark, and then I sketched the solution on the back of an envelope.Half an hour later, we’d drawn it up.
