Renault logo design evolution

Producing cars since late 1897, the Renault corporation was founded in 1899 as Société Renault Frères by Louis Renault and his brothers Marcel and Fernand.

The first Renault car, the Renault Voiturette 1CV was sold to a friend of Louis’ father after giving him a test ride on 24 December 1898. The client was so impressed with the way the tiny car ran and how it climbed the streets that he bought it.

Over the next 100+ years the design underwent nearly a dozen changes as well as the creation of the Renault MN typeface, and its successor Renault Identitéi to become the logo it is today. Continue reading...

Much ado about nothing

In recent days you may have read some of the brewing controversy over the United States Missile Defence Agency. The recent budget cut of 1.2 billion dollars may warrant some conversation if you’re interested in such things, though strangely, the growing controversy revolves around the MDA’s “new” logo design.

In addition to the Trajan wordmark, the logo features a planetary silhouette, a stylized missile and America’s trusty red, white and blue. Hardly surprising, but apparently its all about how you look at it. Continue reading...

Logo designs that lasted

A test of any logo design is it’s longevity, and while some brands seem to change as often as the wind, many do go the distance. A nip here, a tuck there but the idea remains the same.

Starting with General Electric, the 1900 GE logo featured and embossed circle and monogram, not much else has changed. Their have been half a dozen refinements since then but the original idea is alive and well. Continue reading...
